Last weekend Officer Chad Madrid won his first amateaur boxing fight in Cathedral City at the Batte of the Desert event. Chad officially weighted in at 158.5 pounds and competed against a Long Beach PD officer. After months of hard work and dedication, Chad made all of us proud! Congratulations on your first win!

Due to Interim City Manager Lane Dilg’s refusal

Due to Interim City Manager Lane Dilg’s refusal to acknowledge the Santa Monica Police Officer Association’s legal right to meet and confer, we advise City Council to halt the creation of the Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission until a formal meeting with SMPOA can be had. City staff have received and answered many questions regarding the commission, however SMPOA has yet to have the opportunity to voice our perspective on the matter.

We are not opposed to oversight, we are opposed to not being apart of the process and creation of this important community group.

As a Police Officers Association, per the Meyers-M

As a Police Officers Association, per the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act, we are still requesting to meet and confer regarding the cities adoption of the Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission. We have formally asked Interim City Manager Lane Dilg to be transparent with the POA as it relates to the creation of the commission and the affects it will have on our wages, hours, and working conditions.

This is Ellen Wise. Her husband, Santa Monica Poli

This is Ellen Wise. Her husband, Santa Monica Police Sergeant Ronald Wise, was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a man for child abuse on November 3, 1965.

This weekend, members from the police department assisted Ellen move to her new home. Sgt. Wise’s service is not forgotten, and neither is the importance of his family. It is our honor to be there to support them.

Further on Sgt. Wise’s sacrifice:
On that day in 1965, a patrol officer responded to an apartment at 2216 4th Street to investigate a report of child abuse. When he arrived he found a badly bruised and semi-conscious 3-year-old child. The officer requested that Sergeant Wise respond to the scene to assist in the arrest of the belligerent father. When Sergeant Wise arrived, the suspect shot him twice in the stomach. Other officers at the scene returned fire and wounded the subject, who was then arrested.

Sergeant Wise was taken to Santa Monica Hospital where he died from his wounds the next day.

The suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and served only seven years in prison. Following his release from prison he committed a second murder. He was returned to prison where he died while awaiting sentencing for the second murder.

Sergeant Wise had served with the agency for nine years. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

If you have not heard, we deeply regret to inform you that retired Community Service Officer Art Lopez, a 30 veteran of the Santa Monica PD family, passed away on Tuesday 01/12/2021. He worked as a supervisor on the 3rd Street Promenade for a long time, and was known by many of his co-workers for having a big heart, and being kind as well as funny.

There will be a fundraising opportunity on Jan 19th. In the meantime, please keep his family in your thoughts and in your prayers.

Officers Hernandez, Garcia, and Allen didn’t know each other prior to meeting in their chosen profession. They began their career with the LA School Police Department, working together in the inner city of Los Angeles.

They lateraled to the Santa Monica Police Department with the intent to better themselves and continue serving society. The path they took has allowed them to build a strong bond of friendship. If you see them (and K9 Norton) out patrolling, please wave and say hi!

On Thursday, 12/31/20, we received a radio call keep a man with a knife threatening park goers at Ocean View Park. The subject was non-compliant and armed himself with a knife while using a beach chair and luggage as a shield.

We utilized multiple de-escalation tactics including the use of our Department of Mental Health partners and The Crisis Negotiation Team. Ultimately, the subject was taken into custody with less-lethal tactics. There were no injuries to officers, suspect, or community members.

We’ve been actively collaborating with our DMH partners for about five years, collocating two clinicians in our station and deploying one full-time with Patrol and one with our Homeless Liaison Program. Their expertise and better access to County resources and information makes our department stronger. We appreciate our established partnership with DMH and know our work with them
makes our entire community safer.

On November 23, 2020, at approximately 1905 hours,

On November 23, 2020, at approximately 1905 hours, Antelope Valley Area CHP Officer Andy Ornelas was on patrol, riding his departmental Harley Davidson motorcycle, eastbound on Avenue N, east of 34th Street West in Palmdale, California. A Ford F150 pickup truck towing a small utility trailer was traveling eastbound directly ahead of Officer Ornelas. The driver of the pickup truck missed his turn and pulled onto the south dirt shoulder. The driver of the pickup truck failed to observe Officer Ornelas’s motorcycle and made a U-turn, directly into the path of Officer Ornelas. Due to the close proximity, Officer Ornelas did not have time to take evasive action and collided with the pickup truck. Officer Ornelas was ejected from his motorcycle and suffered life threatening injuries, which he succumbed to on December 2nd. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Ornelas in their time of need.

Every day, officers go to work not knowing whether they will come home at the end of their shift. They do this willingly and in the spirit of service This is a stark reminder of the fragility of human life and how quickly and unexpectedly it can be lost. We humbly thank Officer Ornelas and his family for their service.
